"Who are my best salespeople?" sounds like an easy question, but most managers answer it from memory and impression. A CRM lets you answer it from data — fairly, and in a way that helps people improve rather than just ranking them. The trick is measuring the right things.
Activity versus outcomes
Two kinds of metrics matter, and you need both:
- Activity — calls made, follow-ups done, site visits conducted. This shows effort and habits.
- Outcomes — leads converted, bookings closed, revenue. This shows results.
Measuring only outcomes is unfair to someone handling harder leads; measuring only activity rewards busywork. Together, they tell the real story: who is working hard, who is converting, and who needs help with which part.
The metrics worth watching
- Response time to new leads — because speed drives conversion.
- Follow-up consistency — are assigned follow-ups actually being done?
- Conversion rate at each stage — where in the funnel does each person lose deals?
- Bookings and revenue — the outcome that ultimately matters.
Coaching, not just scoring
The point of measuring is not a leaderboard — it is coaching. When you can see that one agent gets plenty of leads but converts few at the site-visit stage, you know exactly what to work on with them. Data turns vague feedback ("do better") into specific help ("your follow-up is slow on day two").
Fairness builds trust
Teams accept measurement when it is transparent and fair. If everyone can see how leads are distributed and how performance is calculated, the numbers become a tool the team trusts, not a stick they resent.
